Deputy Helps Deliver Baby in Back Seat of Car

Sgt. Vega helped deliver a baby girl just six minutes after arriving on scene.

A mother and her newborn were resting at home Monday after a police sergeant found no other option than to deliver the baby in the back seat of a car in Rancho Cucamonga.

Anthony Vega, a sergeant with the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, responded to a call of a woman in labor near the intersection of Arrow Route and Archibald Avenue around 2:27 p.m. Friday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

When Vega realized the baby couldn't wait any longer, he quickly took action and helped Candice Hernandez and the child's father, John Hernandez, deliver a healthy baby girl just six minutes after arriving on scene.

The baby, named Emma Rosa Hernandez, weighed 7.4 pounds and was 18.5 inches.

The mother and her newborn were transported to San Antonio Regional Hospital and later released.
