Military Families Find β€œWounded Warrior” Uniforms Offensive

An upcoming college football game is getting lots of attention -- not because of the players, but because of the uniforms.

The Northwestern University Wildcats won't be wearing the traditional purple uniforms when they hit the field on Nov. 16. Instead, they will be wearing special red, white and blue getups designed to honor veterans and raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. But some military families find the uniforms offensive because they say it looks like blood is splattered on the American flag.

"My son was killed by a head injury," said Karen Meredith, a member of Bay Area Gold Star Mothers. "He was shot in the head and all I could see at that second was that's probably what his Army uniform looked like, that it was drops of blood."

Meredith is not alone.

While most people commenting on the Facebook page for Under Armour, which designed the uniform, say they want to buy the gear, some are just as offended as Meredith. The company defended the design in its response to the backlash.

"We are sorry for any confusion. These jerseys do not feature blood but they do feature an authentic distressed pattern which depicts a flag that has flown proudly over a long period of time," the company said.

Northwestern issued a similar statement, adding that the school is proud to be raising money for the Wounded Warriors Project.
