A man who allegedly threatened a utility worker with a gun in Bel-Air was shot and killed by an officer Sunday morning, officials said.
Officers arrived about 4 a.m. to the 1200 block of Stone Canyon Road after receiving calls from a utility worker claiming he was confronted by a man with a handgun, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
A gas company employee came to the home for a possible gas leak, and when he arrived, the man came outside armed with a handgun, said LAPD Officer Gus Villanueva.
The man held the gun to the worker's head, Villanueva said.
When authorities arrived, the man came onto a balcony of the home armed with a shotgun, Villanueva said. An officer shot the man as he was standing on the balcony, he said.
Neighbors identified the man as Robert Bandler, a 75-year-old Vietnam veteran.
"He was a sweet man," neighbor Bran Lawson said.

The shooting took place about one block from Hotel Bel-Air.
