Man Under Arrest Tries to Escape Squad Car by Kicking Out Window

Police were taking 32-year-old Israel Berumen of Pico Rivera to jail when he tried to escape by breaking the window frame

A man tried to escape from an Alhambra police squad car early Saturday when he kicked out the back-seat window on his way to the city jail.

Officers arrested Israel Berumen, 32, of Pico Rivera, on charges of being under the influence of drugs and trespassing, said Sgt. Esther Rodriguez. Alhambra residents had called police shortly after 3 a.m. about a man who broke into their home and was screaming for help.

Police were taking him to jail when he tried to escape by kicking out the car window, breaking the window frame. Berumen was still strapped in by a seatbelt and never made it out of the car, Rodriguez said.

He now faces an additional charge of vandalism, and is set to appear in court in 2015.

Police estimate repairs to the car to be more than $400, and plan to seek restitution.
