LAPD Officers Kick, Punch Female Suspect: DA

Two male officers allegedly punched and kicked a female suspect at the LAPD Van Nuys station in February

Two Los Angeles police officers have been assigned home with pay while they are being investigated for punching and kicking a female suspect at a jail, a department spokesman said.

The altercation occurred in the jail at the LAPD's Van Nuys station Feb. 24, said LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman, a department spokesman.

The woman, who was not identified, was not seriously hurt, police said. She was taken to a hospital, and treated for unknown injuries before being booked into jail on charges of petty theft and resisting arrest, Neiman said.

The incident was reported promptly to station supervisors, who launched an investigation, which is done whenever an officer uses force on a suspect, he said.

Video of the beating from a security camera seemed to contradict the officer's account of why the officers needed to use force on the suspect, Neiman said.

He declined to detail what the video showed or what the officers say happened.
