Long Beach Council to Consider Compulsory Dog Neutering

The request by Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, as well as councilwomen Suzie Price and Stacy Mungo, asks for a draft law within 90 days.

Long Beach dog owners could be forced to spay or neuter their pets if the city council gives the go-ahead to a proposed ordinance Tuesday.

The request by Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal, as well as councilwomen Suzie Price and Stacy Mungo, asks for a draft law within 90 days.

Exceptions will be made if owners possess a medical exclusion or breeding permit, which would have to be issued by the Animal Care Services Bureau.

Cats are already required to be spayed or neutered in Long Beach.

The measure is supposed to tackle dog overpopulation, despite the 10,549 animals impounded in 2013 being the lowest number in a quarter century.

About 4,400 were dogs, and one out of four were puppies.
