Last California Animal Gas Chamber Dismantled

Animal gas chambers are a thing of the past for California now. The last known carbon-dioxide chamber used to euthanize cats and dogs was dismantled Friday.

Located in a small town in Fresno County, the Coalinga shelter is home to almost 600 animals.

Becoming a top priority for the San Francisco Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the non-profit organization headed to Coalinga to provide training and resources to facilitate the shelter’s transition from no longer using gas chambers.

Efforts to help the overcrowded shelter were made – 40 animals were brought from the shelter to the Bay Area to find loving homes, according to a post on the SF SPCA Facebook page.
