Hemet Police Credit Girl Scout Cookies in Arrest of Motorcycle Pursuit Suspect

A discarded box of Girl Scout cookies was credited with helping police in Hemet arrest a man suspected of evading police during a pursuit on Thursday.

Police had earlier chased a motorcyclist around 4:07 p.m. that did not yield to a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Florida Avenue for a vehicle code violation, according to a news release from the Hemet Police Department.

The motorcyclist fled from officers and threw an unknown object into bushes during the pursuit, according to the news release.

Officers lost sight of the motorcyclist and terminated their pursuit.

A short time later, citizens tipped off the police and said the motorcyclist drove into a mobile home park in the 600 block of north State Street. Officers arrived and located the motorcycle underneath a tarp with smoke coming from the area, according to the news release.

Police located a man suspected of driving the motorcycle.

Officers searched the area where the motorcyclist threw an object into bushes, and found a box of Girl Scout cookies with a note and phone number. Officers called the number on the note and a sales representative confirmed a box of Girl Scout cookies was sold to a motorcyclist.

The sales representative said that identification could be made on the motorcyclist who just purchased the cookies. The sales representative met police at the mobile home park and identified the person who purchased the cookies, according to the news release.

Police arrested Joseph Kopff, 31, for felony reckless evading of police. Kopff was taken to Riverside County Jail where he was held on $100,000 bail, according to the news release.

It was unclear if Kopff had an attorney.
