Illegal Fireworks Found at Site of Mattress Warehouse Fire

The blaze caused $1 to $3 million in damage to warehouses in unincorporated South LA

Illegal fireworks were responsible for a fire that injured four firefighters and damaged three warehouses in South Los Angeles Saturday night, authorities said.

The fire broke out around 9:40 p.m. at a mattress warehouse in the 7500 block of Maie Avenue near Florence and spread to two other warehouses, causing $1 to $3 million in damage, the Arson Explosives Detail of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours until it was extinguished just before 2 a.m. Sunday, Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Miguel Ornelas said.

Four firefighters were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.

Witnesses reported seeing a group of men shooting illegal fireworks at mattresses just outside the warehouse where the fire originated. Investigators found illegal fireworks at the scene.

No suspects were taken into custody Sunday. The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
