FBI Names Person of Interest in Gypsy Hill Cold Case Murders

New evidence is linking a man to the Gypsy Hill murders -- six killings of young women in the Peninsula area in the mid-1970s -- according to reports.

A DNA hit by the San Mateo County Crime Lab has led authorities to declare Rodney Halbower, 66, a "person of interest" in the case, the San Jose Mercury News reported late Monday.

Halbower is currently behind bars in Oregon for attempted murder, the newspaper reported.

There was no word as to what the DNA evidence was.

A task force was formed earlier this year to shed new light onto the killings.

There were five victims in the Bay Area -- Veronica Ann Cascio, Paula Baxter, Carol Lee Booth, Tanya Blackwell, and Denise Lampe -- and a sixth murder victim found in Nevada, Michelle Mitchell, was also linked to the same killer.

The victims ranged in ages from 14 to 26, the newspaper reported. Nearly all the women were raped before they were killed, between January and April of 1976, according to authorities.
