Diamond Valley Lake Once Closed Due to Drought Reopens for Memorial Day Weekend

After banning boaters from a popular recreational lake for an entire year due to drought concerns and low water levels, the Diamond Valley Lake is back open just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The premiere fishing spot located southwest Riverside County near Hemet officially reopened for launching boats on Tuesday.

Due to the drought and record low water levels β€” levels dropped 115 vertical feet β€” boats were banned from launching for fear the boats would start scraping the bottom.

But sunny skies are ahead: water supply conditions have improved, helping to "loosen the drought's grip and allowed us to reintroduce boating and fishing on the lake," a news release from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California read.

"Reopening the lake is equally important to the region's recreational and fishing enthusiasts," Metropolitan General Manager Jeffrey Kightlinger said. "We look forward to offering people throughout the West the opportunity to put their boats back on the water and sample the world-class fishing the lake offers."
