California Clarifies Ebola Protection Requirements

California workplace safety officials have clarified hospital requirements for treating a suspected or confirmed case of Ebola.

Juliann Sum, acting chief of the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, said Friday that the state updated its guidelines for hospitals to provide protective equipment that covers all parts of the body.

Hospitals also must update their plans to include how they would prevent exposure to Ebola.

Sum says the move is intended to clarify a state mandate issued to hospitals last month. California workplace safety laws already go further than national standards.

Nurses called the revision a victory. National Nurses United argued for more training and the type of gear used at premier institutions.

Gov. Jerry Brown met with state agency heads last month to gauge the state's Ebola preparedness.
