Amtrak Café Worker Serenades Pacific Surfliner Riders for 17 Years

Bryant is the only employee of Amtrak's 30 routes to serenade riders.

A beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean isn't the only treat that awaits passengers onboard Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner.

"Every day's a beautiful day for a train ride!" Anthony Bryant's baritone echoes over the PA system. After greeting passengers with songs such as "I Love You, California," he resumes operating the Sea View Café on the train's oceanside journey.

Bryant is the only known employee of Amtrak's 30 routes to serenade riders.

Oftentimes, Bryant's singing is what attracts customers to his cart. Jazz music, coffee and sandwiches greet those who venture into his café.

"I guess I was just having a good day, and maybe it just came to me," he said. Three years after he started working at the café, Bryant made his debut performance.

He said, "It gets people talking, if nothing else, but at the time it was getting people to come down.

Of his 23 years working for Amtrak, he has been singing for 17. The second busiest Amtrak route in the country, the Pacific Surfliner provides Bryant with an audience of almost 3 million people each year.
