Escondido to host its 30th annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby

Ok, it won't be easy.  Compare it to looking for the proverbial "needle in a haystack" but, in this case if you find it ("catch" it) you'll walk away with $50,000.

That's what bagging a specially tagged trout will be worth at Big Bear Lake later this spring.  Fishing season up at Big Bear gets underway next week on April 1, with the opening of the two north shore boat ramps.

The fishing contest for the $50K whopper takes place May 30 and 31 - it's the annual Jim Hall Memorial Tournament.  Along with the top prize, there will be nine other tagged fish worth cash and prizes.

The Big Bear Lake Resort Association has a lot of special packages and events planned for the weekend and they advise you to make your plans early.

Big Bear Lake, by the way, is almost at capacity and they expect to be there soon, which will force them to start releasing water over the dam.  The area has received 120 inches of snow this year so, as temperatures warm up the run-off increases.

The ski resorts, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, are still operating each day for skiers and snow boarders.  It gets a little mushy in the heat of the day but it's still pretty good spring skiing for at least another couple of weeks.
