Eight O'Clock Coffee is Tops: Report

The best buy for penny-pinching java junkies is a bag of Eight O’Clock Coffee, which topped Starbucks, Folger's, Maxwell House, and Dunkin' Donuts, according to Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports named Eight O'Clock Coffee the best deal for caffeine hounds based on its aroma, flavor, floral notes, fruitiness, bitterness and body.

The brand's 100% Colombian coffee was deemed to be a "complex blend," that was "earthy and fruity, with a bright, pleasing sourness" and, at  $6.28 a pound, was said to be the “hottest ground coffee of all.”

Caribou Coffee Colombia Timana at $11.76/lb and Kickapoo Coffee Organic Colombia at $14.33/lb both have fruity aromas but much at a much higher price.  They were ranked "very good" following Eight O'Clock.

Starbucks’ Coffee Colombia Medium, at $11.53 per pound, did not rank among the top regular coffees. It also barely ranked among the top decaf coffees.

Recently Seattle-based Starbucks been struggling to hold onto customers by offering options such as loyalty cards and other benefits to maintain its premium product status.

As people are pinching pennies, high competition from chains like the Caribou Coffee Corporation and Dunkin’ Donuts are forcing Starbucks to implement deals to bring in revenue. Starbucks gourmet coffee chain said it will introduce value-meal type options that will provide customers with an average savings of as much as $1.20.

Bottom line: When it comes to a cup of joe, cost and convenience does not necessarily mean better coffee.
