PC makers are recalling 100,000 laptop battery packs made by Sony.

Computer makers are recalling 100,000 Sony laptop battery packs after 40 reports of overheating, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notice that was sent out Thursday.

According to Sony, some of the incidents involved smoke or flames. 21 of the reports claimed minor property damage and in four cases, small burns were reported. This recall applies to certain Sony 2.15Ah lithium-ion batteries made in Japan. These batteries are made by Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and Toshiba.

Two factors were blamed for the defects Sony said no reports have been filed for batteries made after 2006.

The safety commission said PC users should remove laptop batteries immediately and request the manufacturer to get a replacement.
