Firefighters respond to a train derailment and fire Friday in Rockford Illinois.

ROCKFORD, Ill. – Authorities say one person is dead after a fiery freight train derailment northwest of Chicago.

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says the fatality was that of a female who had been in a car that was stopped at a railroad crossing when the derailment occurred Friday night in Rockford, about 80 miles from Chicago.

Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten says occupants of the car were severely burned when several ethanol-filled tank cars exploded after the derailment of the Canadian National freight train.

Fiduccia said she could not release the victim's name or age or give a cause of death.

The derailment also prompted authorities to evacuate about 600 homes within a half-mile radius of it.
