Hector Sanchez Walk-Off Win

Padres Catcher Delivers a Two-run Homer for the Win

Hector Sanchez was a late addition to the Padres lineup in place of Austin Hedges in Saturday night’s game against National League West rivals, the San Francisco Giants, and what an addition he was. A 2 run walk-off by the catcher gave the Friars the 5-3 victory over San Francisco.

Sanchez found out just prior to the game that he would be stepping in for Hedges, who was still not 100 percent after getting hit in the face mask by a foul ball in Friday night’s game.

Sanchez went 1-for-4 on the night, and was o-for-3 against the Giants returning starter, Madison Bumgarner. The left-handed pitcher was making his first start in three months, after his dirt bike accident back in April. It wasn’t a bad start; Bumgarner went seven innings, striking out five, and allowing just four hits.

Two of those hits resulted in Friars homeruns. Matt Szczur, put the Padres on the board in his first at bat that came in the bottom of the third with a solo homer. The Friars left fielder recorded his third home run of the season and his forth multi-hit game so far this season, to cut the Giants lead in half.

Jabari Blash, who was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Friday delivered in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer. That was his second of the season and the first since playing the Diamondbacks back in April. This gave the Padres a 3-2 lead.

Joe Panik made it a tie ball game with a solo homer in the sixth for his sixth homerun of the season, but Sanchez put the game to bed with the walk-off in the bottom of ninth.

The Friars will take on the Giants in the final game of the series on Sunday as they look to take two out of the three games from San Francisco.
