An elderly man is recovering after being severely beaten with a cane early Sunday in the Sherman Heights area.

The victim, 63, was being attacked by a 58-year-old man near 16th Street and Island Avenue when two patrolling San Diego Police officers came across the men at around 12:30 a.m, said police.

The officers arrested the 58-year-old Hispanic male on suspicion of attempted murder, said Sgt. Ray Battrick with San Diego police.

The victim sustained a severe head injury, several facial fractures and a broken hand during the attack and was taken to an unknown hospital. He is expected to survive, according to a media release.

The victim did not know the suspect and the names of both parties were not immediately released.

San Diego police are investigating.
