Adrian Wins National Award

Padres Slugger is back on track

Every season Adrian Gonzalez has a couple weeks where he goes into a massive slump.  I mean, it looks like he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat (thanks for the line, Crash Davis).  That's what it was like for him a couple of weeks ago, when he was scuffling big time, struggling to even get a ball out of the infield.  But, the good thing about that slump is, he usually comes out of it looking like there's not a pitcher on earth that can get him out.

That's the kind of groove A-Gone is in right now.  Last week he played 7 games, had 12 hits, drove in 9 runs and raised his average 34 points (he's now batting a very healthy .284).  That's kind of totally awesome.  It was also enough to earn him the National League Player of the Week award.  Adrian will be especially pleased to learn he gets a free watch for winning!

Here's more good news.  While Gonzalez was in that funk the Padres never lost their spot in first place in the National League West.  Even though their biggest offensive threat went AWOL for a fortnight they still had enough to hold off a furious charge by the Dodgers, who went unconscious and won 13 out of 14 games.

I don't know about you, but I'm convinced the Padres have a legitimately good baseball team.
