Philadelphia police have Solomon Montgomery, 24, in custody in the killing of police Officer Gary Skerski. Montgomery was shot in North Philadelphia by police after a violent confrontation just before 2 p.m.

Montgomery is currently being held on an outstanding warrant on a robbery charge in San Diego, according to NBC's Philadelphia affiliate, but a police spokesman told the station that Montgomery is an official suspect in the Skerski killing.

Sources also said that a shotgun found at the shooting scene on Thursday could be related to Skerski's killing. Sources also said that Montgomery's mother alerted police that she thought her son could be the man police were seeking in the Skerski case.

The gun battle took place at 5700 North 19th Street after Montgomery was surrounded by police. Sources said that police shot three times at Montgomery, who was hit in the arm, reported the NBC affiliate. Montgomery shot once, according to sources. He has been taken to a local hospital.

Skerski, a 16-year-veteran of the police force, was shot in the throat and killed May 8 during a robbery at Pat's Café in the Frankford area of the city.

Police circulated sketches of the shooter wearing a unique jacket and a baseball cap. The jacket was red, white and blue, with the word "stateproperty" in red letters on the front.

Police have collected DNA evidence and fingerprints from the bar. However, they still need the public's help and ask that anyone with information to call Philadelphia police.

Over $125,000 in reward money was being offered for information leading to Skerski's killer.
