Researchers have released video of the new crustacean discovered in the South Pacific that resembles a lobster and is covered with what looks like silky, blonde fur.U.S. and French researchers said they discovered the animal, which is white and 5.9 inches long. It has been dubbed the "yeti crab" despite its official name, kiwa hirsuta.Scientists said the animal was so different from other species that they created a new genus and new family for it.
Its name is derived from kiwa, the goddess of shellfish in the native eastern island culture, and hirsuta, for hairy.A team of American-led divers found the animal in waters more than 7,000 feet deep at a site 900 miles south of Easter Island last year, according to French researchers.The new crustacean is described in the journal of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
