700 Sailors Touch Down In San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- About 700 sailors landed in San Diego Thursday as two warships returned to the 32nd Street Naval Station.

The USS Fletcher and the USS McClusky touched down around 9:30 a.m., NBC 7/39 reported. The Fletcher deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The McClusky conducted successful drug interception operations in the eastern Pacific, the Navy said.While the sailors were greeted by fog at the pier, there was plenty of sunshine in people's hearts, NBC 7/39 reported. Sailor Mario Martin (pictured, left) proposed to his girlfriend, Sarrai Farranc (pictured, left), shortly after touching down."After being gone for a long time, I felt there was no better way to show my love to the woman I really love," Martin said.
The Fletcher left its Pearl Harbor home port on Aug. 2, 2002. It was involved in maritime interception operations in the Persian Gulf and the Horn of Africa and launched 20 Tomahawk missiles in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the Navy. It is scheduled to be decommissioned in October.The McClusky was involved in drug-fighting assignments in the Caribbean and Central and South America. The frigate conducted five successful drug seizures, preventing the trafficking of almost eight tons of narcotics, according to the Navy.The McClusky also conducted community relations and humanitarian assistance in Mexico, Ecuador, Jamaica and Panama, and rescued 169 Ecuadorian migrants aboard two ships in December.
