POSTED: 8:24 pm PDT May 27, 2008
UPDATED: 6:13 am PDT May 28, 2008

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington has arrived in San Diego en route to its new home in Japan.

A fire damaged the ship last Thursday off the west coast of South America. The fire broke out May 22 in an auxiliary boiler room and air-conditioning and refrigeration space at the ship's stern and then spread to other areas.

No serious injuries were reported, but four sailors were trapped for more than four hours, NBC 7/39 reported.

According to the U.S. Navy's official Web site, the propulsion system was undamaged, and its nuclear reactor was never threatened, but the fire generated extreme heat in some parts of the ship.
