Developer Revives Talks On Chula Vista Convention Center

SAN DIEGO -- The developer that recently halted plans for a $1 billion hotel and convention center in Chula Vista is trying to revive the project, according to a published report.

Gaylord Entertainment sent a new proposal to local labor unions last week, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Tom Lemmon, business manager for the San Diego Building & Construction Trades Council, said the new proposal does not address the issues that caused talks between Gaylord and local labor unions to break down. One of the main sticking points was a union demand that Gaylord hire only San Diego County residents to work on the project.Lemmon told the Union-Tribune that Gaylord's new proposal would let non-union contractors submit bids on for work after unionized contractors had made their bids. Lemmon said that would put the unionized contractors at a disadvantage.Lemmon said he may meet with leaders from other construction unions to discuss the Gaylord proposal in the coming weeks.Previous Stories:
