The cubs were 28 days old and weighed less than 10 pounds when they were taken in by the San Diego County-based Lions Tigers and Bears.
"We could not sit back and ignore the plight of these helpless cubs," Lions Tigers and Bears spokesowoman Bobbi Brink said in a news release. The shelter took responsibility for the cubs from Louisiana Big-Cat rescue. Officials with that organization said the cubs were born after a pair of failed vasectomies in two of their lions.According to shelter officials in Alpine, they took custody of the cubs after getting emergency clearance from California Fish & Game.
