Minutemen Protest Carmel Valley Migrant Camp

POSTED: 5:08 pm PST November 18, 2006
UPDATED: 12:21 pm PST November 19, 2006

A rally to protest migrants camping in a Carmel Valley canyon drew about 200 people, a Minuteman member said.

Protesters had planned to pitch tents in the canyon in an attempt to encourage officials to dismantle the camps.

Migrant workers and day laborers have been living in the camps for years.

However, landowners closed off the property and posted security guards to keep protesters out, police said.

Protesters held their rally on city of San Diego property adjacent to the canyon.

No injuries or arrests were reported as of late Saturday, and police were present to help keep the peace.

City News Service contributed to this report.
