A shared love of adventure has transformed a Sacramento couple and their wedding photographer into viral sensations.
Ashley Schmieder and James Sissom dressed traditionally for their March 16 ceremony. She picked a strapless mermaid wedding gown and he, a tuxedo.
Their venue, however, was anything but traditional.
The pair exchanged vows and rings at Everest Base Camp – 17,600 feet above sea level. Adventure photographer Charleton Churchill said he is the first to immortalize this feat.
Churchill said Schmieder reached out to him last year on Instagram. The couple was toying with the idea of an adventurous wedding, possibly in a tropical location, but didn't have a specific place in mind.
When Churchill floated the idea of getting married at the Everest Base Camp, there was no looking back for Schmieder or Sissom, they said.
The photographer had attempted a wedding at Everest in 2015, but a magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit Nepal, killing thousands of people the week before the scheduled journey.
