“Walking Dead” Zombies to Invade Downtown San Diego

Don’t be alarmed if you come across a whole lot of zombies in downtown San Diego this weekend. It's not the apocalypse -- it merely means it's Comic-Con weekend.

Amid the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con madness, there will be a couple of zombie outbreaks on the streets.

First, beginning at 8 p.m. on both July 25 and July 26, zombies will gather at the entrance of Petco Park and slowly walk -- or more likely, drag -- themselves around "The Walking Dead Escape" obstacle course.

“The Walking Dead” fans can take part in the event by purchasing tickets ranging from $20 to $140, depending on what kind of zombie experience they’re seeking.

The “Spectator” ticket ($20), for instance, is for those who want to witness the zombie madness from designated spectator areas throughout the route, plus entry to the FanFest after-party.

That after-party is happening at McFadden’s restaurant and bar on 5th Avenue at around 9:30 p.m., where attendees can sit back, relax and enjoy some zombie-inspired drink specials.

The “Survivor” ticket ($75) is for those who want to navigate the course first-hand, plus join the FanFest after-party. If you survive, you also get to enjoy a nice, refreshing beer. Meanwhile the “Walker” ticket ($95) includes a chance to meet “The Walking Dead’s” special effects guru, Greg Nicotero, and his team of artists as they oversee your zombie transformation.

Finally, the combo ticket ($140) allows fans to run the zombie course twice, first as a survivor and then as a walker. Plus, they get exclusive access to a special lounge. For more on “The Walking Dead Escape,” visit the event website.

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 5 p.m., an enormous group of zombies will take over the streets of the Gaslamp Quarter for the 8th Annual San Diego Comic-Con Zombiewalk.

This free event begins at Children's Park near Island and 1st avenues and is open to participants of all ages – clad in zombie costumes and makeup, of course. The undead will make their way through busy 5th Avenue, making them hard to miss.

Participants who want to have their makeup done for the big Zombiewalk can visit a pop-up shop at The Haunted Hotel at 424 Market Street and get “zombified” by artists from the Zombie Apocalypse Store Las Vegas. Makeup artists will be there from 10:30 a.m. through 4 p.m. that day and will charge between $10 and $20 for their services (cash only).

Editor's Note: Our original story had "The Walking Dead" event billed as a flash mob and walk. That event is actually a run or walk through a zombie obstacle course at Petco Park on July 25 and July 26. The San Diego Comic-Con Zombiewalk is an entirely different event, which brings zombies to the streets of downtown on Saturday, July 26. The Zombiewalk begins at Children's Park. We regret the error and any confusion it may have caused participants of either event. So many zombies!
