Shakespeare Under the Stars: Old Globe Brings Back Monday Night Movies

This year's line-up features a series of old and new productions of classic Shakespeare films.

San Diegans can spend their Monday evenings this summer watching Shakespeare under the stars.

The Old Globe is bringing back free Monday night Shakespeare film screenings at their outdoor theater, the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. The program is in conjunction with their 2017 Summer Shakespeare Festival.

β€œThis summer the Globe is once again delighted to offer San Diegans the joy of great Shakespeare in many forms, part of our ongoing commitment to make theatre matter to more people,” said Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein.

This year's line-up features a series of old and new productions of classic Shakespeare movies.

  • June 26: Julie Taymor's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
  • July 17: Peter Brook's "King Lear"
  • Aug. 7: Al Pacino's "Looking for Richard"
  • Aug. 28: Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet"

Admission is free and seating for each film is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The line begins one hour before each screening.

Theatergoers can also see two Shakespeare plays performed live this summer at the Globe. "King Richard II", featuring "House" star Robert Sean Leonard, plays through July 15. The Shakespeare classic "Hamlet" will run from Aug. 6 to Sept. 10.

The summer season of free films is curated by the Globe's Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and introduced by Edelstein and KPBS’s Beth Accomando.
