It’s always a good time for a doughnut. San Diego’s famed Donut Bar – known for its lengthy lines during the morning rush – has added late-night hours to its downtown store, plus craft beer.
Donut Bar San Diego, located at 631 B St., will now open up shop from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for its new sweet series, “Donuts & San Diego Craft Beer,” showcasing the store’s finest sweets paired with local brews.
Until now, Donut Bar’s hours were 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. on the weekends until the shop sold out of doughnuts, which usually happens within a few hours. Now, your late-night cravings for one of the Donut Bar’s giant doughnuts can be fulfilled – at least two nights a week.
Donut Bar owner and chef Santiago Campa told NBC 7 on Wednesday the late-night hours are the result of the ongoing popular demand for his doughnuts.
"We decided to also bring in what San Diego is best known for, too -- beer," Campa said.
For now, Campa said the Donut Bar boasts 24 taps, including 20 local brews. In his opinion, Campa said a good, solid IPA is the perfect pairing for one of his doughnuts.

"IPAs go well with doughnuts. The bitter flavor of the IPA versus the sweetness of a doughtnut really compliments one another," Campa explained.
Donut Bar has been posting photos of its doughnut and beer offerings on social media, including the shop’s drool-worthy Instagram page.
Campa said one of his most recent pairings during late-night hours was his Root Beer Float doughnut paired with a Mission Brewery Hard Root Beer.
In addition to craft beer, Campa said Donut Bar's downtown location is also offering Pinot Grigio on tap during the late-night sessions. Mimosas and peach Bellinis are served as well.
Donut Bar, which opened its original location in downtown San Diego in March 2013, is known for its oversized sweet and savory gourmet confections, including its Maple Bacon, French Toast, Salted Caramel and Pizza Waffle doughnuts.
After much success (and many awards) downtown, Campa opened a second San Diego location inside Terminal 2 at the San Diego International Airport. Donut Bar also runs a third shop in the heart of downtown Las Vegas.
Campa said he plans to eventually expand the late-night hours at Donut Bar to a few more days per week, once he's staffed to meet the demand.
His shop will be open late-night all of this week during the MLB All-Star Week events in downtown San Diego.
