In an effort to provide a safe ride for revelers, San Diego’s bus and trolley services will offer extended service on New Year’s Eve, according to the Metropolitan Transit District (MTS).
After the clock strikes midnight – specifically at 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. – all three trolley lines will provide additional trips departing from downtown San Diego. On top of that, the four major downtown bus routes – 2, 7, 30 and 901 – will offer additional 2:30 a.m. departures as well.
The full extended New Year’s Eve service schedule can be seen here.
MTS CEO Paul Jablonski hopes the extra ride options help more people get home safely from the holiday celebrations.
“We want to encourage everyone who celebrates the New Year in downtown San Diego to allow our bus and trolley operators to be their designated drivers,” Jablonski said in a media release. “A one-way fare is just $2.50, which is much less expensive than a DUI that will cost thousands, if not more.”
For party-goers looking take a taxi cab home instead, MTS is partnering with the San Diego Police Department and Gaslamp Quarter Association to expand the taxi stand on G Street from 4th to 6th avenues on New Year’s Eve. The stand opens at 7 p.m. and will have various cabs on standby throughout the night.
In addition, MTS is offering a "friends ride free" promotion on New Year's Day. Any paying passenger can bring one friend along to ride for free.
