San Diego Opera Resurrecting ‘Opera on the Concourse'

On your lunch break this winter, the San Diego Opera is giving you a treat.

The company is resurrecting its one-time "Opera on the Concourse" featuring ensembles for lunchtime crowds outside downtown’s San Diego Civic Theatre.

The free concerts, which will feature a solo singer, duets and ensembles from musicals, will start at noon and last roughly 45 minutes.

The longtime concerts were discontinued in 2007, but are being revived as a way of “saying ‘thank you’ to the community that fought so hard for the company’s survival last season,” according to a news release from the San Diego Opera.

Here are the three concerts the San Diego Opera has scheduled:

  • Jan. 29 featuring the singers of Opera Exposed
  • Feb. 19 featuring the artists of Don Giovanni
  • March 19 featuring the artists of Nixon in China

All concerts will take place at the San Diego Civic Concourse, 1450 El Prado, unless there’s rain or other inclement weather. In that event, the concerts will move inside the theatre and happen in the Beverly Sills Salon.
