Kumeyaay Lake Campground Reopens After 2-Year Closure

After nearly two years of being closed, campers will once again be able to enjoy the Kumeeyaay Lake Campground in Mission Trails Regional Park, as campsites have reopened for overnight use.

The City of San Diego closed overnight access to the campsites almost two years ago due to budget constraints. Since then, visitors have been allowed access for day use at the campsites, but no overnight camping.

With the help of Councilmember Scott Sherman and restored funds as part of the Cityโ€™s mid-year budget update, the campsites are up and running once more.

The online reservation system opened to the public Friday and can be accessed here.

Overnight camping officially begins June 13 for Friday and Saturday nights and costs $20 per night, per campsite, with parking for one vehicle included in that price. Parking for additional vehicles costs $4 per car. Also, pets are allowed at the campsites for an additional $3 fee.

The campground โ€“ located at Two Father Junipero Serra Trail โ€“ has 46 available campsites from which to choose. Each site includes a concrete fire ring, picnic table, mulch-covered tent area and a drive-in parking area.

The 7,000-acre campground also boasts shoreline fishing in Kumeyaay Lake for bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and carp with a valid California Fishing License from sunrise to sunset. The park includes more than 40 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.

In addition, ever second Friday of the month, visitors can join members of the San Diego Astronomy Association at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground overflow parking lot to check out the stars and planets through high-powered telescopes. On the second and fourth Saturdays campers can enjoy a free guided nature walk with a volunteer trail guide beginning at 8:30 a.m.

In a statement released Friday, Jay Wilson, executive director of Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation, said he was thrilled to bring overnight camping back to the area.

โ€œWeโ€™re very grateful to Councilmember Scott Sherman for working together with his Council colleagues to bring overnight camping back to the Kumeyaay Lake Campground,โ€ said Wilson. โ€œCamping here is a great way for San Diegans to experience the wonders of our park at night and during the day, all while staying within the City of San Diego.โ€
