Horton Plaza Mall in downtown San Diego is known for its wide range of retailers but pretty soon, the popular shopping mall will also house a highly-anticipated grocery store
On Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. sharp, Jimbo’s…Naturally! will open its doors at Horton Plaza, becoming downtown San Diego’s first full-service natural foods grocer.
The grocery store is located at 324 Broadway Circle (see map below), on the second-level Nordstrom end of the mall, in the same space where a Mervyn’s used to be. At 28,000-square-feet of space, it’s the largest Jimbo’s in San Diego to date.
With one week until the grand opening, Jimbo’s staffers kept busy Wednesday stocking shelves and getting the store into tip-top shape for customers.
Products in hand, owner Jim Someck – or “Jimbo,” as he’s known – helped stock aisles and told NBC 7 he was excited about the new location in downtown San Diego and bringing high-quality, organic food to customers.
“The demand by the consumers [for organic products] has created this opportunity for us to grow – not just us, but the whole industry to grow – and I think it’s great,” said Someck.
Excited customers couldn’t agree more. Several shoppers at Horton Plaza Mall told NBC 7 they’re looking forward to shopping at Jimbo’s and exploring the healthy options.

“Individuals are more conscious about healthier foods and different options out there,” said one shopper.
“[Organic food] is becoming more and more popular and people are learning more things about it,” said another potential customer.
The downtown location is Jimbo’s fifth store in San Diego. The others are located in Carmel Valley, Escondido, Carlsbad and 4S Ranch.
Unlike others, the downtown store will offer more freshly-prepared, take-out food – a great option for those who live and work in downtown San Diego. Made-to-order options will include a burrito bar with all the trimmings and a wok station.
The store could also boost the local economy by creating more than 100 new jobs to the area.
In terms of parking, customers will be able to park their cars in the 4th floor G Street garage at Horton Plaza, which will offer specially-marked spots reserved for Jimbo’s shoppers. The mall has also just finished building special escalators that can carry shopping carts.
The Oct. 16 grand opening will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. attended by Someck, Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilmember Lori Zapf and other special guests.
