‘About a Boy' Actor Raised in East County

Benjamin Stockham, 13, grew up in La Mesa and Santee before heading to Hollywood

The young star of a new NBC comedy series knows a thing or two about San Diego: he was actually born in La Mesa and raised in Santee.

Actor Benjamin Stockham, 13, plays curious, oddly charming Marcus in “About a Boy,” which airs Tuesdays on NBC. He stars in the TV series alongside Minnie Driver, who plays his mother, and actors David Walton and Al Madigral.

NBC 7 got a chance to speak with Stockham about his new gig and his native roots in San Diego’s East County.

Stockham said he hopes to make America’s Finest City proud with his onscreen work. The teen also joked that he hopes to get a special treat or two from his hometown in the future.

“I’m honored to make San Diego proud and I’m expecting the key to the city, like coming in this giant, golden limousine with Jennifer Lawrence with a ‘Hunger Games’ pin, and, um, Leonardo DiCaprio,” he said, laughing. "I think that's reasonable."

“About a Boy” is about a single mom and her precocious son who move in next door to a single guy, played by Walton, who has just struck it rich after writing a hit song.

The comedy series airs tonight after “The Voice.”
