Hillcrest Hosts 2013 High Heel Race

Heels hit the pavement Saturday at 1:03 p.m. sharp

Hillcrest will be filled with the clickity-clack of high heels this Saturday as the 3rd Annual Amazing High Heel Race hits the streets.

The rowdy race, which doubles as a fundraiser for the ongoing funding of the Hillcrest Pride Flag, consists of individuals or teams racing through Hillcrest while wearing high heels. As they race,
participants must gather the vibrant colors of the LGBT Pride Flag from various participating businesses and complete several silly tasks along the way.

The race registration fee this year is $35 per person in advance, or $45 on the day of the event. Organizers say racers are encouraged to wear fun, wacky costumes on race day.

Each racer is required to wear high heels that are a minimum of three inches tall, and must start and finish the race in heels. That means participants might want to consider carrying along a spare pair of heels or a high heel repair kit, just in case of a mid-race high heel blow-out.

The race begins at exactly 1:03 p.m. in the parking lot of Peets Coffee at 350 University Ave.

After hitting all of the participating Hillcrest businesses marked with special High Heel Race flyers, contestants will make their way to the finish line at the Gossip Grill parking lot at 1440 University Ave.

By that time, there will surely be some sore feet in the house, so Gossip Grill will host a festive wrap up party for competitors who can then slip into comfy flip-flops and celebrate.

Special awards will be given to participants at the party including awards for best time, highest heel, fiercest heel, most creative attire, most spirit and, of course, biggest blister.
