American Psycho: From Book to Movie to… Musical

Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will work on the stage adaptation

Bret Easton Ellis's novel "American Psycho" is about to undergo an unconventional adaptation -- The iconic murder tale is being made into a musical.

"American Psycho," part thriller and part satire, features Patrick Bateman, an attractive Manhattan banker who becomes a killer. The popular novel was written by Ellis in the early '90s and became a movie in 2000.

Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, currently writing for HBO series ''Big Love,'' will work on the play. "Spring Awakening'' composer Duncan Sheik will do the score. The date and location of the show have not been released yet.

According to AP, Sheik sees American Psycho as a, "timesless tale of alientation."

''And, really, what could be more subversive fun than murderous bankers breaking into song?'' Sheik said.

The book's graphic sex and extreme violence caused controversy when it was released. When the controversial book was turned into a film, featuring Christian Bale, producers avoided the controversial scenes of sex and violence. There is no word yet on whether the musical will do the same.
