Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is set to charm the world when her new film, Disney's "Alice in Wonderland," directed by Tim Burton, opens on March 5. But she told Teen Vogue taking on the iconic role of Alice, was a daunting task.

"Alice is such a high-profile character," the rising star told the magazine. "One of the things that was scary about taking on that role is the huge fan base; everybody has their own idea of who she is. So [Tim and I] discussed, very early on, just being happy with her being our Alice … making her my own."

Mia revealed that the upcoming film features a new take on Alice – and shows the young woman a step or two beyond the one portrayed in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" and "Through The Looking-Glass."

"Alice is nineteen, and she returns to Wonderland with no recollection of having been there before," Mia said. "I really think it will be exciting, especially for girls my age because it explores that period of your life when you have these expectations upon you and you're finding that, amongst that, you have to try and hold on to yourself."

The actress, who cable audiences will know from her stint playing Sophie, a gymnast with an eating disorder on the acclaimed HBO series "In Treatment," is poised to break out this year thanks to "Alice." But she has another big project on the way too – the lead role in "Jane Eyre."

But Mia told the mag, she's not ready to be recognized wherever she goes.

"I like my anonymity — that when I meet people they don't know me," she said. "And work wise, I like getting jobs because I auditioned for them, because of my ability as opposed to my celebrity."
