Actor Michael Jace pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge in the shooting death of his wife at their home last month in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles.

Jace, 51, best known for his role as LAPD officer Julien Lowe on the television drama “The Shield,” is accused of shooting his wife, April, at their home on the 5400 block of Brynhurst Avenue around 8:30 p.m. May 19. Police said Jace was arrested after calling 911 and telling the operator he shot his wife.

The body of April Jace was found inside the house.

Since being arrested, Jace has been held in jail on $2 million bail. The judge also ordered Jace to stay away from the couple's two children and not contact them if he is released on bail, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Fire Department released a three-minute 911 call from April Jace's father in which he said Michael Jace told him he had just shot his wife.

April Jace worked as a counselor in the financial aid office at Biola University, located in La Mirada, at the time of her death. Co-workers said she possessed a "radiant personality" and displayed great "love for helping students and families."

April Jace had two young sons with the actor. Police said the children were in the house during the time of the shooting.

A statement released by her family said they were focused on caring for the children.

"We cannot reverse the senseless violence that resulted in April's death but we can invest in the lives of her innocent children that are paying the price for it," the family wrote in the statement.

Jace is next due in court on August 1.
