“SNL” Addresses the Sequester

Opening sketch and Weekend Update poke fun at GOP and Dems inability to make a deal.

This week’s episode of "Saturday Night Live" poked fun at the commander in chief every chance it could.

They had a lot of ground to cover, from the lack of a deal to avert $85 billion in sequester cuts to mixing up Star Trek/Star Wars terminology during a press conference.

"SNL" began with its own White House presser where Obama (Jay Pharaoh) tried to put the gravity of the spending cuts into perspective. He first said that his wife Michelle Obama would "only do four television appearances a week, down from her usual 75."

A FAA worker then explained that air traffic controllers will watch a 20 second ad for Doritos before looking at their radar screens, a border patrol agent said they'll let every tenth Mexican run across the border, and national zoo spokesman said that he would fire three monkeys and let them loose on the streets of the nation's capital.

"They'll be homeless, out in the streets just tossing poop and ripping off faces," the zookeeper said.

Obama then had a naval officer, a police officer, a construction worker and a Native American join him on stage. He told the Village People-esque grouping to have faith that the failed political talks and their economic ramifications wouldn’t destroy the county.

“Young man, there’s no need to feel down,” Obama said, as the men slowly made postures in the letters of Y-M-C-A. “Young man, pick yourself off the ground. Young, man, just because your funding is down, there’s no need to be unhappy.”

On Weekend Update, host Seth Meyers continued the sequester banter with a tirade of his own with critical words for Republican House Speaker John Boehner.

“He’s the man for the job,” Meyers said. “If the job is not doing your job.”

Comedian and SNL host this week Kevin Hart also appeared on the segment. Along with Meyers, the duo addressed Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's comments this week on continued renewals of the Voting Rights Act On Wednesday, Scalia said that the repeated renewals of the act since the Civil Rights era were, “a phenomenon that is called perpetuation of racial entitlement.”

"Supreme Court, don’t think you can’t be called racist because Clarence Thomas is your one black friend,” he said. “Nothing is more racist than having one black friend."

NBA great Dennis Rodman made headlines this week when he and members of the Harlem Globetrotters traveled to North Korea to spend time with the country's supreme leader Kim Jong-un and to hold basketball clinics in the country. Rodman (Jay Pharaoh) and Jong-un (Bobby Moynihan) were also guests on the segment.

After “The Worm” and the Korean dictator expressed his love for American pop culture, Jung-un discussed how different basketball is in North Korea.

"The winner of the game gets a cracker," he said.

Hart also played Oscar nominee Quvenzhane Wallis in another sketch as well as a survivor turned walker, with swag, on “The Walking Dead.”

The musical guest was rapper Macklemore and DJ Ryan Lewis.
