WATCH “Mad Max: Fury Road” Trailer Roars In

The trailer for the latest "Mad Max" update roared into Comic-Con over the weekend.

It's been 35 years since George Miller introduced us to the post-apocalyptic world of loner Max (originally played by Mel Gibson in the first three films of the franchise), and the director now returns to the dystopian setting with "Mad Max: Fury Road." It's neither a sequel nor prequel but a new story featuring a new cast including Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Nicholas Hoult.

Hardy stands in for Gibson as Max Rockatansky and Theron plays new character Imperator Furiosa.

Miller told fans at the Comic-Con Warner Bros. panel on Saturday that the latest installment lies closer in spirit to the second film of the trilogy, and described "Fury Road" as "a Western on wheels. Even if it's in the future, we have gone back the more elemental behaviors. More medieval. The setting is very spare and clear."

"Mad Max: Fury Road" hits theaters May 15, 2015.
