The Hollywood speculation is over to see who will play the lead female role in the upcoming film "Gone Girl," the movie based on the best-selling mystery thriller by Chicago author Gillian Flynn.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Rosumund Pike ("Jack Reacher") has been offered the highly coveted role, and will star opposit Ben Affleck when filming starts in September.

Other actresses rumored to be in the running for the part included Charlize Theron, Olivia Wilde, Emily Blunt and Reese Witherspoon, whose production company purchased the film rights last year.

The movie will be directed by David Fincher of "Fight Club" and "The Social Network" fame.

Flynn, who lives in Ukranian Village, also wrote the screenplay for the film. The storyline revolves around a wife who goes missing on her wedding anniversary and her husband who becomes the main suspect. The book was one of the biggest sellers of 2012.

Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are also in the running for supporting roles, according to Hollywood Reporter.
