'Groundbreaker in Comedy, Voice for Justice': Stars React to Death of Dick Gregory

Celebrities and fellow comedians took to social media to share their heartbreak and condolences after it was announced that civil rights activist and comedian Dick Gregory died Saturday night at 84.

Gregory's family confirmed his death on social media, using the comedian's Twitter account. They asked for privacy as they grieve, but appreciate the "outpouring of support and love" they have received.

As one of the first black standup comedians to find success with white audiences, in the early 1960s, Gregory rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to win a college track scholarship and become a celebrated satirist who deftly commented upon racial divisions at the dawn of the civil rights movement.

Here are some of the celebrities' reactions to the news of Gregory's death.
