Jessica Simpson Outsells the Celebrity Brand Competition

When it comes to celebrity clothing and accessories line, Jessica Simpson has emerged as the somewhat surprise chart-topper.

It feels like not a week passes without the news of an emerging celebrity fashion brand, ranging from mass bargain chain tween lines to one-time collaborations, and everything in between. At the same time, each week brings the public another celebrity gossip weekly with Jessica Simpson somewhere in its pages, most often the target of some sort of criticism.

It may seem like a shock, then, that Simpson would come out on top, grossing around $1 billion for her namesake brand over the years, and expanding from shoes to swimwear to jeans and beyond. Apparently, an entirely different set of metrics applies to celebrity lifestyle brands. Simpson, in this arena, has beat out the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Madonna—both mega-watt stars that generally outshine the rest, but not when their names are on tags of items shoppers want to buy.

Simpson's retail success makes sense, really. She doesn't always say the brightest things, like everybody else, and gets unfairly scrutinized for her weight. She's beautiful, talented and highly imperfect—stars, they are just like us. And she has channeled that relatable nature into her shoes, clothing and accessories, which are affordable, unfussy and generally cute—just like her. It's an extremely winning combination after all.
