Matt Damon's Father Battling Rare Cancer

Matt and Kent Damon had a personal investment in a recent charity benefit for Massachusetts General Hospital - it's where the elder Damon has been receiving treatment for a rare, incurable cancer.

The 68 year-old is suffering from multiple myeloma, which is described as an accumulation of cancerous plasma cells. Reports claim Damon's disease is in remission, but he will never be completely free of the affliction.

"The Adjustment Bureau" star took the charity opportunity - called "The One Hundred Celebration," held in Boston - to personally thank the staff of Massachusetts General.

β€œMy family is so grateful for the care you’ve given us,” said Damon. β€œIt’s deeply humbling to see how many people here are committing their lives to helping others.”

He later admitted that the news of his father's illness came as a complete shock.

β€œWe’ve lost some close personal friends to cancer in recent years, but I never thought it would happen to my dad, the marathon runner." He then added: β€œIt sucked.”

Damon's "Bourne Identity" co-star Chris Cooper was on hand at the event to lend his support, as were Sen. John Kerry, New England Patriot Jonathan Kraft, and "American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta.
