LA authorities are looking into an accusation Mel Gibson beat up his ex-girlfriend in January.
The Sheriff's Department said in a news release Thursday that it has opened a preliminary inquiry into the alleged attack on Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of the "Braveheart" actor's seven-month-old daughter.
The release states the alleged attack occurred Jan. 6.
A phone message left by The Associated Press for Alan Nierob, Gibson's spokesman, was not immediately returned.
Gibson, 54, and ex-wife Robyn divorced in April, 2009 after 30 years of marriage and six kids.
