A former television reality show producer accused in the death of his wife at a Cancun resort was ordered to remain in custody Wednesday to stand trial in Mexico.

A judge in Cancun announced the decision Wednesday morning that Bruce Beresford-Redman, a former producer for the reality show "Survivor," will stand trial for aggravated homicide in the death of his wife, 41-year-old Westside LA restaurant owner Monica Burgos.

A trial date was not immediately scheduled. Defense attorneys plan to appeal the decision.

Beresford-Redman must remain in custody until the trial begins. He nearly fainted when he was told he would be held for trial, according to an NBC News producer in the Cancun courtroom.

"The decision has renewed our faith in the international justice system," the Burgos family said in a statement.

Beresford-Redman is accused of killing his wife two years ago, then dumping her body in a sewer when the two were vacationing in Cancun. In February, he was extradited to Mexico to face the allegations.

Beresford-Redman opted in December not to appeal a U.S. court ruling upholding his extradition.

The couple's two children also were staying at the Cancun hotel at the time of Burgos' death. Their 6-year-old daughter testified at a July 12 extradition hearing that Beresford-Redman and Burgos were getting along during the trip, but prosecutors alleged that Beresford-Redman killed his wife for insurance money and to gain custody of the children.

Hotel guests claimed they heard the couple arguing in their room on the night Monica Burgos disappeared. Defense attorneys said the noises came from the couple's children.
