NBC 7 San Diego - Press Release Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

SAN DIEGO, CA – February 28, 2012 - NBC 7 San Diego today announced the live broadcast of two one-hour San Diego mayoral debates  on Monday, April 23 at 6:00 PM and Sunday, May 20 at 6:00 PM.  Invited to participate in each of the live NBC 7 San Diego broadcasts are Carl DeMaio, San Diego City Councilmember; Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego County District Attorney; Nathan Fletcher, California State Assemblyman; and Bob Filner, U.S. Representative.  Political reporter Gene Cubbison will lead a panel of three journalists from NBC 7 San Diego and VoiceofSanDiego.org asking questions of the candidates, with NBC 7 San Diego news anchors Mark Mullen and Catherine Garcia each moderating one of the debates. This has already been an unprecedented campaign that began in earnest a year out from the election.  We wanted to make sure our coverage was unprecedented as well,” said Greg Dawson, NBC 7 San Diego Vice President of News.  “We have rotated the candidates through weekly in-depth interviews since the early days of the campaign.  Now we are planning two televised mayoral debates to help viewers understand the candidates’ in-depth positions on the important issues facing San Diego.”

In addition to the two debates, NBC 7 San Diego will launch a new public affairs program, “Politically Speaking,” starting on Sunday, March 4.  Each Sunday immediately following “Meet the Press” at 9:00 AM, Gene Cubbison will focus on political news and analysis important to San Diego.  Cubbison has covered San Diego government and politics for 40 years, starting as a print reporter for a small independent San Diego newspaper in 1972.

We have always been devoted to covering local politics. But from the mayor’s office to the white house, the issues are far-reaching… employment, pensions and football stadiums just to mention a few,” said Dawson.  “With a new weekly program hosted by Gene Cubbison, the San Diego reporter most known for political coverage, we will be on top of it all.”
