San Diego Remembers

commemorating 9-11 in your local community

Approaching the ten-year anniversary of September 11th, we remember the lives lost on that tragic day and embrace our pride as Americans and love for our country. While most of us in San Diego are unable to attend the opening of the 9-11 Memorial in New York City, there are several opportunities to attend dedicated events taking place in our community.

September 3, 2011, the San Diego Fireman’s Relief Association will host the 9-11 Memorial Stairclimb and Community Festival at the San Diego Bayfront Hilton. The commemorative stair climb is intended to honor the firefighters who sacrificed their lives on 9-11. NBC 7’s Artie Ojeda and Whitney Southwick will take on the climb alongside firefighters, military, law enforcement officers, and civilians. The 110 floor climb, designed to honor the 343 FDNY, 23 NYPD, and 37 Port Authority members lost on 9-11. During the climb and throughout the day, there will be a community festival going, with food, entertainment, beer garden and kids activities. All proceeds will benefit the FirefighterAid and National Firefighters Foundation. For more information about this event visit the 9-11 Memorial Stairclimb website.

Sunday, September 11, 2011, NBC 7’s Monica Dean will emcee the Freedom Walk 2011.  Organized by Operation Homefront, the walk symbolizes our dedication to remembering the lives of those individuals lost on 9-11 and the ability to carry on from such tragedy through the strength and unity of our nation. The 5k walk, being held at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay begins at 730am registration, with ceremony at 9am and walk begins at 10am. The event is free and open to the public.
